Thank you so much to Derry City & Strabane District Council for supporting this project.

If you were out & about at Illuminate the Walled City, you may have seen our brand new stilt characters lighting up the town
Well, we wanted to say a big THANK YOU and put the spotlight on the amazing artists who created the costumes!

This piece was conceptualised by our Creative Director Rachel and was intended to be an homage to the industrial revolution in the city, the shirt factories and the overwhelmingly female workforce who powered them.

Artists Jack McGarrigle & Caoimhe O Neill where then brought on board to use their spectacular creative eyes, brains and hands to bring this idea to life (and wow, did they!)

Jack (pictured) is an artist, maker and facilitator from Derry, with a passion for community engagement, public arts and history. Ever since he was a child he was always fascinated by the sewing skills of his granny, who used to sew alterations for Austin's departments store, and his aunt who worked her whole life in Derry's famous shirt-factories, from whom he learned most that he knows! Jack works mostly in textiles and embroidery, but also includes sculpture, drawing and performance.

Caoimhe (pictured) is an avid lover of the arts and creativity. Caoimhe started her maker journey by simply volunteering at North-West Carnival Initiative where she first started making large willow lanterns, sculptures, and a range of other St Patrick day and Halloween parade props and costumes. Over the years, Caoimhe has worked with Ireland’s most creative makers and owes all she knows to them.

On working on the project, Jack said:

"Having this opportunity to make costumes based on Derry's industrial heritage was absolutely fabulous. I'm so glad we got to pay homage to our past in a way that the younger generations find exciting; and I got to reconnect with an amazingly creative friend and (hopefully) future collaborator, Caoimhe O'Neill. We complement each other perfectly, it was such a joy - go dream-team!"

Go dream team indeed!!

Also, huge thank you to Derry City & Strabane District Council for funding this project and to our artists for populating it: Zoe Ramsey, Sorcha Shanahan, Michael Johnston & Denzil Browne.
